Fields left off

Questions

What is the Product Hunt tagline character limit?

Product Hunt's Launch Guide says the tagline caps at 60 characters: https://help.producthunt.com/en/articles/17350772-launch-guide. Preparing for your Product Hunt launch also says Tagline (max 60 characters): https://www.producthunt.com/launch/preparing-for-launch. This page counts that field as Unicode grapheme clusters, because Product Hunt does not publish a separate weight for emoji or links.

What are the character limits for an X post, a LinkedIn post, and a Reddit title?

X's counting-characters documentation says a post can contain up to 280 characters. Emoji count as 2, CJK characters count as 2, and URLs count as 23: https://docs.x.com/fundamentals/counting-characters. LinkedIn Help says posts can contain up to 3,000 characters (https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a528176) and that the character limit for a post is 3000 characters (https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a522483). Reddit's API documentation for POST /api/submit says the title is up to 300 characters long: https://www.reddit.com/dev/api/. A subreddit can set a shorter title_text_max_length in its post requirements.

How does this page count characters?

Product Hunt, LinkedIn, and Reddit counts are Unicode grapheme clusters after NFC normalization, so a character you see as one glyph counts as one. The X count follows the weights on X's counting-characters page instead: a URL that starts with http://, https://, or www. counts as 23, an emoji counts as 2, and other code points count as 1 or 2 using the weight ranges in the twitter-text v3 config that page links (https://github.com/twitter/twitter-text/blob/master/config/v3.json). A bare domain without that prefix, such as example.com, is counted character by character here. The text stays in your browser and is not uploaded.

Why is there no counter for a Product Hunt name, first comment, Hacker News title, or meta description?

Those fields are left off because the official page does not publish a single character maximum. Product Hunt's How to post a product describes the name and the first comment without a maximum (https://help.producthunt.com/en/articles/479557-how-to-post-a-product). The description is 260 characters in the Launch Guide and How to post a product, and max 500 characters in Preparing for your Product Hunt launch, so this page does not pick one number. The Hacker News guidelines discuss titles and do not state a character maximum (https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html). Google Search Central says there is no limit on how long a title element can be (https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/title-link) and no limit on how long a meta description can be (https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/snippet).

Is the Launch Character Counter free, and is the text saved?

Yes. It is free and does not ask you to sign up or sign in. The count runs in your browser. MakerHunt does not receive or store the text you paste.
